KF Scholarship for Graduate Studies

The Korea Foundation (KF) Scholarship for Graduate Studies (GS) program aims to foster a new generation of Korean studies scholars by providing scholarship to students who are currently enrolled in an MA or Ph.D. program in Korean studies.

 

1. Scholarship: KF Scholarship for Graduate Studies

 

2. Institution: Korea Foundation (KF)

 

3. Eligibility: Scholarships are provided for foreign masters and doctoral students majoring in Korean studies to nurture the next generation of Korean studies in countries worldwide.

- Students currently registered at a university

- Those with non-Korean citizenship

- Korean citizens with permanent residency status in other country

* Graduate students enrolled in natural science, medicine, engineering, MBA, law school, and translation and interpretation programs are not eligible to apply. 

 

4. Recipients: Approximately 150 around the world per year

 

5. Eligible Areas: Master's or doctoral programs in Korean studies in about 30 countries around the world

- Applicants are categorized into six groups according to the country of their university, and the application and selection process is implemented by each group.

1) Group1 (North America): U.S. and Canada / Selection method: Individual application

2) Group2 (Europe): U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, etc./ Selection method: Individual application

3) Group 3 (Russia): Russia / Selection method: Agreement signed by KF and major universities

4) Group 4 (Asia): Japan, China, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia / Selection method: Agreement signed by KF and major universities

5) Group 5 (Oceania): Australia and New Zealand / Selection method: Individual application

6) Group 6 (ASEAN): Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Philippines, Laos, etc. Mongolia / Selection method: Agreement signed by KF and major universities

 

6. Grants/ Benefits: Tuition (Different by region/country in consideration of local tuition and price level)

 

7. Grant Period: 1 year

 

8. Application Period:

1) Group1 (North America) - Application Period: January ~ February / Award Notification: April / Conclusion of Agreement & Disbursement: May ~ June

2) Group2 (Europe) - Application Period: March ~ April / Award Notification: July / Conclusion of Agreement & Disbursement: August ~ September

3) Group 3 (Russia) - Application Period: October ~ November / Award Notification: November / Conclusion of Agreement & Disbursement: December

4) Group 4 (Asia) - The application period varies by country

5) Group 5 (Oceania) - Application Period: October ~ November of preceding year / Award Notification: December of preceding year / Conclusion of Agreement & Disbursement: Individual application

6) Group 6 (ASEAN) - The application period varies by country

10. Reminders

- Master's candidates are eligible to apply for funding for up to two years while doctoral candidates for up to three years.

- Fellowship is not awarded if recipients do not reside in the country of their university during the fellowship period.

- Preference is given to applicants who are proficient in Korean so that they can use Korean primary sources for their study and research.

- Fellowship recipients may not hold concurrent fellowships from either the Foundation or other institutions.

- Fellowship is valid only for the year as originally requested in their applications, and may not be deferred to the following year.

- The KF Postdoctoral Fellowship is a one-time award. Previous fellowship recipients are not eligible to apply again (with the exception of European recipients).

 

11 Responsibilities of Fellowship Recipients

1) Submission of a Report

- Fellowship recipients are required to submit a report about their achievement within one month after the end of the fellowship period, using the KF's report form.

2) Further Reporting Requirements

- Upon obtaining their degrees, fellowship recipients are required to submit a copy of their master's thesis or doctoral dissertation to the Foundation. They are also required to inform the Foundation of their research achievements, major activities and any changes in their academic career.
